Trying to make something of this day

  • Oct. 16th, 2009 at 2:54 PM
English Major
I have to do volunteer hours at The Adult Literacy Program and I have become very disillusioned. I can also choose to do 5 "outside" hours at a place of my choice. The nice library at Phoebe home is gorgeous but a freakin' mess. No one can find anything. No "by author." "by subject," etc...Just a mess. So I called the Volunteer office and offered to fix their library. I mentioned that I was an English Major to boot. It made them very, very happy. It's hard for residents to find books when there is no system. Kids there also like to read when they visit and they can't find anything.

So if they say yes, I'll make sure I'll go in on a day that Greg's not there (so there is no distraction) and make a day of it. It won't be done in five hours but at least it's something I can do outside of this house that is quite frankly suffocating me and that's five less hours I have to spend at the Adult Literacy Program.

The Test

I took my make up test today. I will be the realist I am and pray for a "C." I will be an optimist and pray for a "B."

The multiple choice section was a piece of cake. I read the works and I listed in lecture. That's all it takes. And that's half the grade.

I chose the essay comparing Idealism and Realism comparing and contrasting Poe, Franklin, and Bradstreet (A Puritan writer). Thank the gods he privately tutored me on Poe.

So we'll see. I don't think I got a "D" or an "F" and that's something.

I can't stress anymore. It's over. Thank the gods.

I only prayed Athena would guide me through.

Hail Athena!

Writing a lesson plan on The Holocaust is probably the hardest thing I've ever done in my life.

And I have to teach it to the class.

How am I going to make it through without weeping when I can't even watch the end scene of Schindler's List (which is one of the lessons) without breaking down.

I sure picked a doozy for myself, didn't I.

Perhaps Beowulf would have been easier.

Almost back on Academic track

Went over Poe and Hawthorne privately.

Scheduled test for Friday morning (only time I actually don't have some sort of therapy appointment).

Finished all four of me Ethics papers (Yes. Four.)

Finished two unit plans. Not sure what she wanted because I wasn't there so I did it two different ways.

Contacted Observation teacher and am setting up a time to meet with her. Looks like every Monday afternoon and every other Friday afternoon.

It looks like I've finished what I need to but the wind is really knocked out of my sails here. I'll do the work but It'll be a long time until I enjoy it again.

I managed to finish it. Small picture here. Detailed pictures (bigger) under the cut.
Oh, and in case anyone wants to know why I used that border...electricity and lightning plays a significant part of each novel; the animation of the monster, Nicholas Tesla and the New Transported Man, and the odd blue electrical phenomenon at the entrance to Castle Dracula.

I asked my English professor for a one week extension on the first exam. I missed the last class and the notes as well as having little inclination to study. Greg and I decided I should tell him the truth about what happened.

If he won't allow the extension I'll have to take the hit on a major exam. I hope I'll be able to absorb it in with the other two exams, the paper, and the quizzes.

Totally pointless post

Found an old (but still good) coupon for one large pizza with one topping. Ordered a large sausage. It got here with no sausage. They sent another one and said to keep the first one. Two pizzas for free.

Took a sneak peak at British Literature's reading list. I have to take it in the spring. The novel of focus? The Lord of the Rings. That class is going to suck.

That's about it.

It's fucking hot.

Pics from Graduation

Just thought I'd post a few grad pics from last night. I'm a little annoyed that they only announced me as Summa Cum Laude and not Summa Cum Laude with a perfect academic record. I don't like being grouped in with the other Summas and their pitiful 3.99s. ;)

I did it.

Two degrees. 4.0

My oath is completed. Good thing too cuz I forgot to add "or die trying."

May both Athena and Odin look upon me favorably.

I have officially finished both of my Associate's Degrees. Final exam earlier today.

Now the agonizing wait. Do I graduate with two 4.0s or two 3.99s.

It's quite painful.

I was so bummed this semester that I was in two classes that would probably not require any written papers. Yes, I'm a freak. I like to write research papers.

Oh joy! Oh happiness! I get to write a paper!!

My topic: Deforestation and the Emergence of New Pathogens

That is soooo cool. He gave only one week. Most of the students in class grumbled. Piece of cake. :)

It also appears that I will have to take a second science and lab at Cedar Crest. (booooo!) However, at least there is a cool class. Evolution and Ecology. (Yay!!!)

"Well, I can tell you now that your application and acceptance letter will only be a formality. Welcome to Cedar Crest College."

And thus it begins....

I will be scheduling an appointment with the registrar's office at Cedar Crest College. It appears that you do not need to apply separately for scholarships. The computer does it automatically once your transfer information is entered (which includes your honor society information). If I get in I qualify for four different scholarships. I can accept all four at the same time if I want.

Onward forth to the big smart people type school!

Whoot!

The Education Honor Society has tagged me for membership. Kappa Delta Pi is starting a chapter on our campus this semester. Wheeeeee!!!!

Greg's got a lot of Greek catching up now. Sucks that he still has more alphabet soup after his name. :(

So there is a hold on my account. WTF, of course. I don't owe any money and I'm in good standing. Called Enrollment and it's a graduation hold. Geez already. Can you email students to let them know what's going on (especially twitchy ones like me!).

Looks like I have enough credits to have a second Associate's Degree. All I have to do is put in an application for an Associates in Liberal Arts and since this is an extra degree I wouldn't be going to any ceremony. Just get my degree sent to me in August. No extra work needed. No extra money required. What the hel. Why not. Looks good for me.

So, there it is.

I'm off to the dentist in T-minus 12 minutes.

Pray for me.

I have completed the magnum opus of my Associate's Degree. My paper on reducing inmate recidivism through high school and post secondary education is finished and ready to be submitted to the Beacon competition.

This is far and away a better paper than the extended breastfeeding paper that won last year.

I have hope.

Anyone who wants to read it may. Comment with your email if I don't have it and I'll send you a copy.

Although I have yet to speak to the head graduation coordinator I was told my the secondary coordinator that I am grandfathered. My graduation requirements are that of the program I signed up for and the course compliment it required which I completed as of May.

Once again I have proved to be quite a twitchy little thing, though perhaps in this case rightfully so.

I guess I can go ahead and purchase those stoles and cords.

If the head honcho overrides this, believe me, I'll let everyone know. In fact the scream may be so loud you'll hear it from where ever you may be in the world.

It appears that my college has changed the graduation requirements. As of last semester when I ran a degree evaluation you only needed on math course (3 credits). As of last semester when I ran a degree evaluation I was fine with the exception of biology. As of my most recent degree evaluation I don't qualify for graduation this spring because I don't have a second math class.

This is not fucking cool at all and I'm pretty sure there is nothing I can do about it. Maddie doesn't have school in the summer and they don't offer any math classes that I can do in the summer anyway (I can't do calculus or trig). I need either Logic which is only in the spring (means it'll be another year til I graduate) or at the very least have to wait until after the fall semester which means I get my diploma in the mail.
